Lawrence Matthews | “Either They Don’t Know or Don’t Show”

“Either They Don’t Know or Don’t Show” is a series of prints by Lawrence Matthews inspired by two previous bodies of work exploring violence in 1990s Black American films and the Rodney King riots. Each piece uses images from various 1990s films set in South Central Los Angeles juxtaposed with photography from the riots. Many of these films were created to address the gang culture and violence plaguing Los Angeles at the time but in doing so created personas and characters which when popularized, for better or worse inspire younger generations of Black Americans.
