Joey Miller “The 5 Fifths Project”

In the wake of the death of Trayvon Martin and the many who have died since him, and with the rise of the #blacklivesmatter campaign, I felt a need to bring the discussion home to Memphis. The old Clayborn Temple downtown was the site of the sanitation workers strike in 1968, but in recent years the church has fallen into extreme disrepair. It seemed to me to be an apt metaphor for the state of race relations in the US right now. The iconic “I AM A MAN” posters were printed in that church. My idea was to photograph black men inside the church holding those same signs. I wanted to include women as well, so I had a similar sign made that says, “AIN’T I A WOMAN”. My only goal is to contribute to the discussion and get people talking more. Come out and see these photos, and if you want to be a part of the series, I’ll be shooting more for the rest of the year.

Included in the first round of photos: Ziggy / Drea / Adrienne / Ryan / Drew / Shahidah / Victor / Irene / Shaka / Elle / Eso / Stephanie /
